Can you measure the intelligence of a human being without an understanding of a possible limitation? Intelligence is often defined as “the ability to learn or understand or to deal with new or trying situations” (“Intelligence”). According to the American Psychological Association (APA), the ability to understand complex ideas, to adapt effectively to the environment, to learn from experience, to engage in various forums of reasoning, to overcome obstacles by taking thought, will vary for every individual (Colom). Based on such a conclusion, it can easily be implied that ability is the measuring stick of intelligence. Does this metric mean that there is a limit to the amount of intelligence a human being can possess? Throughout history, there have been attempts to straddle a fence between the genetic makeup of a human being and intelligence.

As racism made its mark in society, a manufactured stereotype was theorized when Black people were being oppressed and terrorized by their white counterparts. It became a global narrative that members of the Black race were inferior to members of the white race. This was assumed to be a reality in every dimension of human existence. The pseudoscientific theory of scientific racism was supported by Darwinism. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, anthropologists who were studying racial evolution, in which they labeled the study of so-called primitives, theorized Anglo-Saxons were the most advanced humans and that Blacks were at the bottom on the scale of human evolution (White et al. 92).

The theory behind scientific racism suggests that the white race is superior to not only the Black race but all races. It was put into practice when zoo backers decided to put a Mbuti man named Ota Benga on display at the monkey house in the Bronx Zoo in 1906. Scientific racism also…
